Quarter-Twenty Button-Head Bolts

Quarter-twenty bolts were part of joining the added light-bar extrusion to the rack and attaching the lamp. Bolt length also became a recurring detail in the later camera-mount fabrication.

Why I bought it

The rack used quarter-twenty hardware, while the added 2020 extrusion used M5 hardware. The button-head bolts were included in the supplies for the roof-equipment work.

The small connecting brackets needed bolts at both profiles. Their hole locations, nuts and washers were part of the same assembly decision.

How I used it in my camper van

I cut and drilled the light-bar connecting pieces and fastened them to the rack with quarter-twenty bolts, lock washers and flat washers. The light bar itself attached with quarter-twenty bolts and flat washers.

During the later camera-mount work, I noted that I wanted shorter bolts so I would not keep shortening them with the grinder. That bolt-length problem sat alongside the repeated drilling and bracket fitting.

My review

The useful lesson was treating bolt length as part of the fabrication plan. Cutting the metal pieces was not the end of the fitting work when the hardware still needed attention.

The finished connectors look straightforward in the photo, but the diary records the extra time spent on nuts, bolt length and positioning. Those small assembly details were repeated around the roof equipment.

Selecting the bolt length belonged with planning the bracket, rather than being left until final assembly.

Two alternatives to compare

The IMScrews option uses a bright stainless button head at one length. The iexcell assortment changes to taller socket heads and provides several lengths. Head profile and the choice of shank lengths are directly relevant to the fitting work recorded in my build.
