Falken Black Aluminum Composite Panel

Why I bought it

I originally bought black aluminum-composite material while considering it for the main interior panels. When I needed a custom cover at the passenger seat, I already had a piece available.

The seat platform slanted, which would have aimed the vent toward the floor. I made a cover with a front panel and two triangular side pieces so the vent faced out at a right angle to the floor.

How I used it in my camper van

I cut and fitted the front and side pieces, then attached the cover with screws and brackets. The bracket positions required openings in the seat platform, which I made with the grinder.

One screw went in at an awkward angle and left an unsightly hole. I needed a larger washer to cover it. The photographs show the black front panel and the shaped side pieces during fitting.

My review

I found the material easy to work with and cut, and I liked how it looked. Those were my recorded reasons for being pleased with it on this cover.

The cover still required fitting and adjustment. The angled screw and larger washer are a useful reminder of the actual work behind the finished black face. The material provided the panel surface; brackets, screws and careful fitting made the assembly.

A piece already on hand became a custom front panel and two triangular sides.

Alternative products

Two alternatives to compare

The Install Bay ABS sheet offers a plastic panel blank. The Alexandria Moulding panel offers a wood-based blank that can be finished as part of an interior project. These are alternative materials to compare for custom trim fabrication, with different surfaces and finishing work from the black composite sheet I used.
