Cutting & Abrasives · My build experience

Dura-Gold 40-Grit Sandpaper Roll

Sanding was part of finishing the opening beneath the passenger seat after the cutting work. The Dura-Gold coarse abrasive roll was included in my tools for that project.

Why I bought it

The floor opening needed preparation beyond making the cut. My tool list included a metal file, sandpaper and the Dura-Gold 40-grit roll alongside the powered cutting tools.

I was working toward the next fitting and coating steps around the opening. Abrasives were part of that surface-preparation stage, separate from the tools that removed the larger pieces of metal.

How I used it in my camper van

After making the floor opening with the drill, saw and grinder, I sanded the area and applied primer and paint. The opening then moved into the equipment-fitting stage.

The next session also involved finishing cuts in the passenger-seat platform with a metal file and sandpaper. That repeated finishing work is why the abrasive supplies belong with the cutting tools in my build kit.

My review

The useful lesson from my build is that cutting and surface preparation were separate pieces of work. Sanding remained on the list after the opening had been made.

The photographs show the opening at the later preparation stage. The overall process included marking, making access, removing metal, finishing and coating before fitting the next part.

Making the opening did not complete the surface-preparation work around it.

Alternative products

Two alternatives to compare

The Dura-Gold PSA roll uses an adhesive backing instead of the hook-and-loop backing on my listed roll. The Diablo option uses circular hook-and-loop discs in 60 grit. Backing, abrasive grade and tool format distinguish these surface-preparation options.

These coarse sanding discs use a hook-and-loop attachment surface. Their circular format provides another approach to surface preparation with a disc sander.
