DEWALT DCD794B Compact Drill/Driver

The compact drill/driver was in my tool kit for the metal-opening, camera-mount and storage-drawer work. Those jobs repeatedly moved between making holes and fitting components.

Why I bought it

The build required drilling in several very different settings: the passenger-seat area, camera mounts on the roof rack and the timber storage assembly. The DCD794B appeared in my tools for those projects.

I kept a drill/driver alongside the saw, grinder and hand tools used for fabrication. It served the hole-making and assembly stages within those larger jobs.

How I used it in my camper van

For the floor opening beneath the passenger seat, I started with a drill and step bit before using the saw and grinder. Later, the camera-mount work involved widening holes so the cameras could attach to the extrusion assembly.

The storage-drawer work brought drilling into the timber assembly. I drilled and screwed the drawer frame together, attached its base, added brackets and fitted the drawer slides. The drill/driver was listed for that work too.

My review

The useful role of the drill/driver in my build was how often it came back into the process. Hole-making was needed before cutting in one project and before fastening components in another.

My experience with it is best explained by those jobs: starting an opening, widening mounting holes and assembling the storage frame. The surrounding tools and materials changed, but drilling remained a recurring part of fitting the next component.

Drilling was a recurring preparation step across the metalwork and storage assembly.

Two alternatives to compare

The DEWALT DCD800B provides another cordless drill/driver in the DEWALT range. The SKIL alternative is a compact drill kit supplied with its own battery and charger. Tool format and the battery equipment already in the kit are the useful comparison points for these alternatives.

Questions from my build

What jobs involved drilling?

The floor opening, camera-mounting holes and the timber storage-drawer assembly all included drilling work.

Was the drill the only tool used for the floor opening?

I used it to start the opening, then worked with the reciprocating saw and grinder as the cut progressed.
