DEWALT DCG412B Angle Grinder

My cordless grinder was part of the metal-cutting work under the passenger seat, from the floor opening to the bracket openings for the custom cover.

Why I bought it

I needed to make openings in the floor and the passenger-seat platform for my heater project. The DCG412B was one of the powered tools listed for that work, alongside a drill and reciprocating saw.

This was fabrication around an existing seat platform, with a custom cover to follow. The grinder had a place in that combination of tools rather than being the only tool for every cut.

How I used it in my camper van

For the floor opening I began with the marked mounting-plate template and a drilled starter hole. The drill, saw and grinder were used together to remove the rectangle. I then sanded, primed and painted the area.

Later, while making the black cover, I used the grinder to cut openings in the seat platform for the cover brackets. Those bracket openings were a separate task from the original floor cut.

My review

The grinder was useful across more than one stage of the same fabrication job. It appeared in the main opening work and again when I needed access for the cover brackets.

The surrounding work took time too: marking, drilling, filing, sanding, painting and fitting. My experience puts the grinder in the middle of that workflow. The finished cover depended on those other steps as well as removing metal.

The grinder returned to the job when the cover brackets needed their own openings.

Alternative products

Two alternatives to compare

Both alternatives use mains power in place of my cordless arrangement. The Makita 9557PBX1 and DEWALT DWE402 each use the four-and-a-half-inch grinder format and a paddle switch. The main practical difference for this comparison is bringing a power cord to the work area instead of relying on a tool battery.
